William I. Ong
2018 LO President
Ladies and gentlemen, friends, members of participating organizations, brothers and sisters, good afternoon.
It is my greatest pleasure to welcome you all in the opening ceremony of the second season of JCI-Legazpi’s Bolero Cup. Today, we are gathered not just to showcase our skills, but most importantly, to practice sportsmanship and create a strong, unifying bond, between all the members of our various organizations.
When this tournament was first implemented, it was just between the members of our organization and our regular basketball buddies. Just 4 teams of close friends where everyone knows everyone. It was a really friendly, yet still pretty competitive basketball tournament. We all got to play, we all had fun, some lost weight, some gained weight because of post-game eating and drinking sprees, a few got minor injuries, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY the camaraderie between the members of JCI – Legazpi became stronger, closer, and more pronounced.
Now, we want what happened in the first season to happen with this season…except the injuries of course. We want a memorable experience that will further temper the bonds of brotherhood between each of our members, and between our organizations.
I want everyone to remember that the Bolero Cup was not made just for the purpose of basketball alone. It is a commitment, a way to unite all NGOs that has a common goal for our community, and that purpose is CREATING POSITIVE CHANGE.
With basketball as a unifying tool, we hope that we get along better and realize that PEACE AMONG OUR ORGANIZATION IS POSSIBLE. With that, we can Lead communities Stronger, help each other better, and create a deeper impact with the community projects that we do. In the words of Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern-day Olympics; “The important thing is not to win, but to take part; the important thing in life is not triumph, but the struggle; the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”
Let this beginning be the start of something new. Let this be the start of a better change for ourselves, for our friends, for our organizations, and for our community.
Again, welcome to the FIRST INTER ORG BOLERO CUP! ANG LARO NG MGA MAMBOBOLA!
